While working at Pamlico County’s middle and high schools, Doug’s primary duties were to help reduce high school attrition rates; after he started working with at-risk students, he reduced the dropout rate from 7.5% to .5%. He was subsequently recognized by the State Superintendent and the North Carolina Governor for Pamlico County Schools for having the lowest dropout rate in the State of North Carolina. Prior to his retirement, the dropout had fallen to .1%.
Pastor Pearsall also founded Pamlico Youth Development Community Organization (PYDCO), a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to empower at-risk youth in the community to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their personal potential. PYDCO provides reading buddies and mentors for elementary and middle school students, resources to victims of local disasters (such as Hurricane Florence) and enables the local FAA to purchase food for after school programs. Pastor Pearsall is the president of the Pamlico County NAACP Branch 5429, which has collaborated with various organizations and non-profits in Pamlico and surrounding counties and offers two annual scholarships for graduating seniors at Pamlico County High School.
